Clinical Techniques

Hand Therapy
Treatments

Ms Razo applies a comprehensive range of evidence-based clinical techniques tailored to your condition, stage of recovery and personal goals. Treatment is always grounded in a thorough assessment and a clearly defined plan.

What to expect

Evidence-based care
from first appointment

Every patient receives a thorough initial assessment before any treatment begins. This establishes your goals and creates a measurable baseline. Treatment is then delivered using whichever combination of clinical techniques best suits your condition, adjusted at each session in response to your progress.

Ms Razo holds the Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) credential, the highest specialist qualification in Hand Therapy - ensuring that every treatment decision is informed by the deepest available specialist knowledge of upper limb rehabilitation.

Assessment & Evaluation

Every course of treatment begins with a thorough, standardised clinical assessment. This establishes a precise diagnosis and a measurable baseline from which treatment progress can be tracked.

  • Range of movement measurement using goniometry
  • Grip and pinch strength testing with dynamometry
  • Sensory assessment including Semmes-Weinstein Monofilament Testing
  • Functional ability assessments, including manual dexterity, and validated outcome measures
  • Special diagnostic tests specific to the presenting condition
  • Review of imaging and surgical reports where relevant
Standardised outcome measures are used throughout treatment to ensure care remains evidence-based and goal-directed.

Custom Splinting

Ms Razo custom fabricates thermoplastic orthoses tailored precisely to each patient's anatomy and clinical needs. Splinting is used for protection, pain relief, positional correction and to support the healing process after injury or surgery.

  • Static thermoplastic splints
  • Static progressie and dynamic splints for progressive mobilisation
  • Soft splints and orthoses for comfort and protection
  • Night resting splints
  • Splint review and modification as the condition evolves
All splints are made in clinic at your appointment. No off-the-shelf products are used where a custom fit is clinically indicated.

Manual Therapy

Hands-on treatment techniques applied directly to the joints as well as soft tissues of the hand and upper limb. Manual therapy addresses pain, swelling, stiffness and restricted movement.

  • Joint mobilisations to restore movement
  • Soft tissue massage to reduce swelling and improve circulation
  • Passive stretching to address contractures and stiffness
  • Scar mobilisation and desensitisation
  • Oedema management including elevation advice and compression
  • Neural mobilisation for nerve entrapment conditions
Manual therapy is frequently used within rehabilitation programmes as part of an integrated treatment plan.

Therapeutic Activities & Exercises

Progressive, evidence-based rehabilitation programmes designed to restore manual dexterity, strength, mobility and function. Tasks are prescribed to your specific condition, stage of healing and personal goals.

  • Tendon and nerve gliding
  • Progressive strengthening for grip, pinch and upper limb power
  • Fine-motor skills and dexterity training
  • Sensory re-education following nerve injury or repair
  • Work hardening and return-to-work programmes
  • Ergonomic advice and activity modification guidance
Home Hand Therapy programmes are provided in writing and reviewed at each session. They are progressed in line with your recovery.

Thermal Treatments

Therapeutic modalities used to support tissue healing, reduce pain and improve the extensibility of stiff soft tissues. Used as an adjunct to hands-on treatment, therapeutic activities and exercises.

  • Used to reduce pain and prepare tissue for Hand Therapy
  • Cryotherapy to accelerate soft tissue healing
  • Paraffin wax therapy providing deep, moist heat to the hand, wrist, forearm and elbow
  • Heat application for pain management
Thermal treatments are used selectively where clinically indicated, not routinely applied to every patient.

Wound Care & Scar Management

Advanced wound care and scar management for post-surgical and post-traumatic presentations. Early intervention reduces the risk of scar complications that can restrict movement and function.

  • Wound assessment and dressing selection
  • Suture removal
  • Scar massage to restore tissue mobility
  • Silicone gel treatment to optimise scar remodelling
  • Desensitisation programmes for hypersensitive scars
  • Compression and bespoke splinting for hypertrophic or contracted scars
Early scar management significantly reduces the likelihood of long-term restriction in movement and function following surgery or injury.
