Ms Michelle Razo, Belfast’s only Certified Hand Therapist (CHT), and fellow Dubai-based Hand Therapist, Mr Blair Agero, delivered a Hand Therapy seminar to the final year Occupational Therapy interns at Cebu Doctors’ University in the Philippines.
The lectures
Ms Razo covered proximity blindness, upper limb plus hand peripheral nerve entrapments and how the two intertwine. Nerve entrapments are a clear example of the idea at the heart of proximity blindness, where the true source of a problem can sit far from where the symptoms are felt. Mr Blair Agero lectured on distal radius fracture management.
Teaching the next generation
The seminar gave final year Occupational Therapy interns a window into specialist upper limb practice from two Hand Therapists working internationally. Proximity blindness is a clinical reasoning framework Ms Razo has developed and teaches. Sharing it with students at the start of their careers helps embed crucial critical thinking early.
