Ms Michelle Razo delivered two specialist Hand Therapy courses at the University Medical Center of El Paso (UMC) in May 2025, teaching an audience of approximately 70 therapists from across rehabilitation disciplines. The courses focused on the assessment and treatment of the triangular fibrocartilaginous complex (TFCC) and peripheral nerve conditions of the upper limb.
About UMC El Paso
The University Medical Center of El Paso is one of the most significant medical institutions in the American Southwest. As the primary teaching hospital affiliated with the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine at Texas Tech University, UMC serves as a major training environment for the next generation of healthcare professionals in the region.
UMC is also the only Level 1 Trauma Center within a 250-mile radius and houses the region’s only Comprehensive Stroke Center — a designation that reflects the complexity and volume of cases managed there. They include a wide range of hand, orthopaedic, neurological and trauma rehabilitation presentations.
The courses
The two sessions covered the clinical assessment and non-operative management of two areas with significant diagnostic and treatment complexity:
TFCC Assessment & Treatment — covering clinical testing and evidence-based rehabilitation management protocols for triangular fibrocartilaginous complex injuries, including approaches designed to achieve recovery without surgery.
Peripheral Nerve Conditions of the Upper Limb — addressing the assessment, differential diagnosis and management of nerve conditions from the cervical spine to the hand, with a focus on clinical reasoning in a rehabilitation setting.
The audience included therapists from a broad range of rehabilitation backgrounds, which contributed to a dynamic and clinically rich exchange throughout both sessions.
